Chokokan was founded in 1927 by Nabeshima Naomitsu, the 12th head of the Nabeshima family, as the first museum in Saga Prefecture.
Founded on the wish to connect local history with the city's development through the museum and repay those who, together with the Nabeshima family, had helped sustain Saga Domain, Historical Museum Chokokan began its journey alongside the people of Saga. Carrying forward the vision that inspired its founding, the museum will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2027.
This preview exhibition presents the ties between the Nabeshima family and their home region of Saga through Important Cultural Properties (nationally and prefecturally designated) passed down in the family, including the Saibara Music Score, Saga Prefecture's only National Treasure.

Four Prefecturally Designated Swords Passed Down in the Nabeshima Family, All on Display Together!
Chokokan is dedicated to presenting objects passed down in the Nabeshima family.
Through works of art and craft that enriched the lives of the Nabeshima family and historical materials that trace their journey, visitors can learn about the history of the Nabeshima family as the lords of Saga Domain and later a marquis family, as well as the history of Saga. The building, constructed in 1927, was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1997 for its significance as one of Saga Prefecture's foremost examples of Western-style architecture from the early Showa period. The museum also houses six of the ten nationally designated cultural properties in Saga City classified as crafts, calligraphy, or ancient documents, as well as 17 prefecturally designated Important Cultural Properties. This exhibition presents every nationally and prefecturally designated cultural property in Historical Museum Chokokan's collection.
